Guasha, which means scrape, is a therapy that employs a smooth-edged massage tool to "scrape" the surface of the skin. In calling for further study of the mechanism by which the therapy works, a review of controlled clinical trials by the National Institutes of Health in 2010 posited three ways in which Guasha might work to reduce musculoskeletal pain: “It increases local microcirculation thereby decreasing distal myalgia; pain is reduced through stimulating the serotonergic, noradrenergic and opioid systems; and it minimizes the direct effects of pain at nociceptors, their surroundings and the interconnections within the spinal cord.”
In my experience, especially with my neuropathy patients, it stimulates the soft tissue, which in turn boosts circulation of the blood and releases muscle tension, and calms the nerve endings.
Because of its anti-inflammatory effects, it works on pain, stiffness, fever, chills, coughing, wheezing, nausea and vomiting.
This hand-carved wooden tool fits beautifully in the hand. It has just the right combination of edge and smoothness to allow you to rub vigorously without damaging the skin.
